Pharmacy Historian now Professor of Egyptology

 

Univ.-Prof. Dr. Tanja Pommerening is now Professor of Egyptology at the University of Mainz. She gave her inaugural address on “Neue Betrachtungen zur altägyptischen Heilkunde“. Pommerening studied pharmacy at the University of Marburg, followed by postgraduate studies in the history of pharmacy and a masters degree in Egyptology. Her background in natural sciences opened the door for several projects related to medicines used in old Egypt. All good wishes for a successful University career! See. October-27-2011

Pharmacy history research group founded in Turkey

 

A national pharmacy history research group has been founded recently by Prof. Dr. Afife Mat, Mr. Mert Sandalci, and Dr. Halil Tekiner in Turkey. TETAG (Türk Eczacilik Tarihi Arastirma Grubu) aims to pioneer pharmacy history research and activities in the country as well as to liaise with pharmacy history bodies at the international level. ISHP Congress Berlin to be a success

 

As early registration deadline went by, already 300 colleagues have registered for the International Congress in Berlin. Approximately 150 presentations (lectures and posters) were suggested. June-14-2011

Dutch Society for the history of Pharmacy becomes disorganized

 

Annette Bierman wrote: With some regret I have to inform you that the Dutch Society for the history of pharmacy will cease to exist on January 1st 2011. The main reason for this decision is that almost all members of this Society happen to be members of the Kring voor de Geschiedenis van de pharmacie in Benelux as well. December-29-2010

Composition of 2000–year-old Roman pills identified

 

A cross-disciplinary team of the Institute for the Preservation of Medical Traditions and the Smithsonian Institution has succeeded in identifying the components of pills more than 2000 years old. Years of attempts have been successful: next-generation DNA sequencing has enabled scientists of the Smithsonian Institution to identify the plants mixed together to compound these pills. http://medicaltraditions.org. The editors of the Pharmacy in History invite historians to consider submitting a manuscript for inclusion in this peer-reviewed scholarly journal. Pharmacy in History publishes essays on the history of pharmaceutical practice, science, and industry, including the history of drugs and therapeutics and facets of the related medical sciences. Wellcome Centre for the History of Medicine is closing down

 

Sad news for historians of medicine and pharmacy: The Wellcome Trust and University College London (UCL) have decided to close the Wellcome Trust Centre for the History of Medicine. It will be winded down over a two-year period, see. Apr-17-2010
